Readiness Unmeasured, and a Time for Reform

Ostrolenk speaks with Matt Fay, Foreign and Defense Policy Analyst for the Niskanen Center on Defense Reform. Fey comments on the Pentagon’s claim that a readiness issue resulted from sequestration. However, Fey argues that such an assertion is difficult to prove, given that the Pentagon does not utilize adequate metrics to measure readiness, relying on input, rather than output, indicators. Further elaborating on various structural issues, Fey speculates on if we are at a time of Pentagon reform.

The Interests For Which We Intervene

American-Foreign-Policy-Military-Intervention-Kevin-KreneckOstrolenk speaks with Paul Saunders, Executive Director of the Center for National Interests, on US military intervention. Saunders sets out by explaining how American conventional wisdom has become set on fixing every problem and righting every wrong. This ambitious foreign policy, however, is based on intentions rather than results. Saunders argues that we should intervene only when the cost is low, the probability of success is high, and the results will demonstrably benefit the United States.

#FeinWisdom: Taking Back the 4th Amendment

An illustration picture shows the logo of the U.S. National Security Agency on the display of an iPhone in Berlin, June 7, 2013. The debate over whether the U.S. government is violating citizens' privacy rights while trying to protect them from terrorism escalated dramatically on Thursday amid reports that authorities have collected data on millions of phone users and tapped into servers at nine internet companies. REUTERS/Pawel Kopczynski (GERMANY - Tags: POLITICS SOCIETY BUSINESS) - RTX10EYWOstrolenk speaks with Constitutional Scholar Bruce Fein on the upcoming expiration of Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which allows the NSA to collect data from domestic and international phone calls without warrant or suspicion. Despite 9 years in use, the NSA has failed to tie any of the information gathered through 215 to acts of terrorism. Not only impractical, but a massive invasion of our privacy, 215’s authority, Bruce insists, should be allowed to lapse in June.

#FeinWisdom: The Economic Implications of a Country too Big to Fail

EmpireOstrolenk talks with Constitutional Scholar Bruce Fein on why the American Empire can be categorized as one “too-big-to-fail.” By permitting businesses to grow so large that the economy relies heavily upon them, the government becomes quick to bail out even the most mismanaged business to prevent economic collapse. Such a system has led to income inequality based not on differences in innovation, hard work, and creativity, but rather on the fact that the game is rigged. This results in a sluggish economy that can only be fixed by getting the federal government out of the affairs of businesses.

#FeinWisdom: The U.S.’s Quagmire in the Middle East, a Product of an Empire-Mentality

Quagmire in the Middle East (1)Ostrolenk speaks with Constitutional Scholar Bruce Fein concerning the United State’s complex entanglement in the Middle East, which currently includes fighting with the Iranians in Iraq against ISIS, against the Iranians and Hezbollah in Syria, and protecting Hezbollah against ISIS in Lebanon. The intricacy of our current entanglement, Bruce comments, is proof that we need to return to the fundamental principles of our country’s founding: our influence abroad should be that of example, and not one that risks liberty at home to transform foreign societies. We have built an empire, and to return to America’s fundamental principles we must eradicate the desire to expand and control.

The Importance of the Surveillance State Repeal Act

SSRA1

Ostrolenk talks with Patrick Eddington, a Policy Analyst in Homeland Security and Civil Liberties at the CATO Institute, and former CIA analyst, who shares his views on the importance of passing the Surveillance State Repeal Act. This bill, originally introduced by Former Representative Rush Holt, would essentially repeal all 150(+) provisions of The Patriot Act, including troubling provisions allowing for administrative subpoenas, and no Congressional oversight. Detailing the ways in which these provisions are being used to collect data on American citizens, Eddington shows why secrecy is one of the most toxic aspects of our government.

#FeinWisdom: Hillary’s Email

HillaryOstrolenk speaks with Constitutional Scholar Bruce Fein on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton using her personal email for work-related communication. Most troubling to Bruce is the lack of transparency, as well as lack of security, in Mrs. Clinton’s actions. This behavior, he concludes, is an example of our government’s trend towards unchecked power.
