In 1994 Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) to protect consumers ability to purchase dietary supplements. Now 17 years later, the FDA is attempting to re-interpret this act and impose regulations that could shut down the dietary supplement industry. In this podcast, Michael Ostrolenk interviews James Gormley – Vice President and Senior Policy Adviser of Citizens for Health – about their efforts to stop the over-regulation of these popular medical products and organize the vast consumer and industry opposition to these draconian measures. The FDA states that this “guidance” will protect consumers, but in reality the opposite is true; it will harm them by preventing patients from obtaining effective treatments and remedies outside of the control of the medical industrial complex.
